Steamfitter
As a steamfitter, you’ll prepare, assemble, fabricate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals and fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating and other process systems. You can work in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial construction, as well as refineries, LNG facilities and shipyards.

Typical responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints
- Install supports, valves, piping and control systems
- Weld pipes to form piping systems
- Measure, cut, thread and bend piping
- Cut openings for piping in walls, floors and ceilings
- Select type and size of piping
- Clean and maintain pipes
- Prepare cost estimates
Common skills you need for the trades
Math
Math is used across the skilled trades. You may work with decimals, fractions, measurements, conversions, area and volume to plan work, calculate materials, monitor operations and troubleshoot.
Reading
Strong reading skills help you work safely and effectively on the job. You’ll use them to understand instructions, equipment manuals, safety information, drawings and other technical information.
Science
Basic science principles help you understand how things work and how materials behave. Across the trades, this can include concepts like electricity, heat, force, pressure and the properties of different materials.
