Addressing the labour shortage
Major growth in the years ahead will lead to increased demand for skilled workers.
Canada’s construction industry needs to replace over 250,000 retiring workers. Low Canadian birth rates, competition from other sectors and the need to diversify the workforce also make it difficult for organizations to recruit and retain new workers.
We work with organizations to address labour demands through skill building and training of new workers, fast-tracking apprentices and helping to diversify their workforce.
Diversifying the Workforce
A diversified workforce strengthens and shapes how an organization functions. Recruiting individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups helps organizations meet the demand for skilled labour and diversify the much-needed workforce. We support organizations in building a diverse workforce.

Every Canadian deserves a fair and equal chance at success in the workforce.
Recent investments by the Government of Canada are intended to significantly increase the jobs and skills training available, especially targeted at individuals from groups typically under-represented in the workforce, such as those with disabilities, women and Indigenous Peoples.
Did you know?
As many as 50% of apprentices fail to complete their programs. This is compounded by the barriers faced by specific populations – women are significantly under-represented in the trades as are many racialized groups and Indigenous people.
Improving access, retention + completion in apprenticeship
Many apprentices find it difficult to meet entrance requirements and complete their technical training due to traditional pathways, a lack of supports and skill gaps in required knowledge.
For over 30 years, we have worked with thousands of apprentices to help them get in and through their apprenticeships.
Reinforcing knowledge + skill transfer
Eighty per cent of learning takes place on the job — making mentorship a critical element in building a high-quality workforce. For over a decade, thousands of apprentices and journeypersons across North America have implemented our customized mentorship program.
Evidence shows our mentorship training program improves safety, productivity, quality and worker wellness.
Addressing climate change
Canada’s ability to meet its climate change commitments will rely heavily on the need for a climate-literate and skilled workforce. Yet, many training programs in Canada have not been designed to prioritize climate literacy in the trades.
Working in partnership with CBTU and industry, we are helping skilled trades professionals advance their understanding of their role in constructing and maintaining net-zero projects to help Canada meet its climate goals.
